Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic and debilitating illness that affects approximately 29 million people aged 20 years or older in the United States. Beyond genetic predisposition and poor control of health risk factors, such as glycemic control and BP, social and demographic factors have shown to increase the risks of adverse diabetes outcomes. Health literacy (HL), identified as one non-clinical factor associated with diabetes health, is described as â€Å"the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and health services needed to make appropriate health decisions†. While there is growing evidence that HL has a critical role in self-management behaviors (SMB) among people with T2DM, findings of empirical†¦show more content†¦Additional measures included a validated survey of health literacy (Newest Vital Sign), diabetes knowledge, diabetes self-efficacy, health information seeking (HIB) behaviors and diabetes self-care activiti es. Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) values were extracted from the electronic medical record of the clinic. Data Analysis To make the fullest and most efficient use of the information collected in this community-based HL assessment for this vulnerable patient group with T2DM, both exploratory and theory driven regression analysis will be conducted. The first step in the analysis is to graphically display major outcome and explanatory variables to: 1) identify outlying or influential observations and the need for transformation to simplify analyses, and 2) summarize the relationships among key variables. Standard psychometric methods, including Cronbach alpha to assess internal consistency, reliability and factor analysis to assess the scale structure (partial construct validity), will be used to verify the psychometric properties of summary scales for each of the major measurement instruments. Prior to testing the theoretical model guided analysis, univariate distributions will be inspected to assess normality and identify outliers, skewness, or other abnormalities in distribution, and to determine appropriate summaries of location and spread and the need for transformation.
